Osteopaths work primarily on the neuromuscular-skeletal system, and also pay attention to relevant psychological and social factors in order to form a diagnosis. They treat the whole person and not just the areas causing symptoms/pain. This is because osteopaths believe the cause can often originate in another area of the body, either from an old injury or as referred pain.
Osteopathy is a system of healthcare and not just a series of techniques applied to the body. It is based on the philosophy that the body should be able to auto-regulate itself in order to maintain a state of health, balance and harmony. The body should be able to adapt and recover from traumatic events, however sometimes this ability to adapt and compensate gets overwhelmed, and may need some assistance.
Our osteopath uses manipulative techniques (where you hear a ‘click’ or a ‘pop’ in a joint similar to chiropractors), as well as cranial techniques. Cranial osteopathy is a gentle and safe approach to treating mechanical strains in the whole body, not just the head as the name implies. Cranial osteopaths simply recognise the importance of the subtle influences of structures within the head and their influence on the whole body.
